A modular outdoor furniture concept that invites everyone — regardless of ability — to share a picnic in the park.
BACKGROUND & BRIEF
People who use wheelchairs or live with disabilities face many challenges in daily life.
This project aims to create inclusive furniture that is accessible and functional for everyone.
The design also emphasizes modularity and serial production, with careful consideration of material choices and standardization.
The result
is a modular furniture series with smart features that make it easy for people with disabilities to enjoy a picnic in the park.
Standardized bench legs for simplified production
Two bench widths that allow space for wheelchairs at the table
Optional backrests and armrests to support easier transfers in and out of the bench
Angled leg support underneath for greater control when sitting down or standing up
RESEARCH
To gain deeper insight into what it means to use a wheelchair, we spent a day navigating everyday life in one.
We performed common daily tasks to better understand the challenges people face and how social interactions and attitudes may change as a result.
EVALUATION AND
FORM DEVELOPMENT
During the ideation phase, we focused on addressing the key needs and challenges identified in our research.
The furniture is designed to be accessible, supportive, and welcoming to everyone — especially since wheelchair users can often feel like they are in the way or excluded.
Once the overall form and functions were defined, we tested size and accessibility using quick prototypes and 3D printed models.
