The mobile home accessory that offers extra support and confidence in everyday life, regardless of age or needs.

BACKGROUND & BRIEF
As society ages, more and more people require the right kind of support at home.
In this project, commissioned by Scapa Inter, we designed a user centered home accessory.
The brief, called Scapa Längre, focused on just that — creating furniture and home accessories that people can live with for longer.
Through sustainable and well considered material choices along with smart solutions, the aim was to ease everyday life as age or physical limitations make daily routines more challenging.

THE RESULT
Stödja is a mobile support accessory for the sofa and the bed.
It consists of an MDF core, wrapped in medium-firm foam, covered with a removable fabric, and finished with leather loops at each end.

The leather loops, combined with the accessory itself, allow multiple units to be connected and arranged into combinations that provide exactly the kind of support needed. In this way, users can regain a sense of confidence and independence when the body no longer fully cooperates.
Thanks to its modularity, Stödja offers the extra support needed to sit comfortably in the sofa, as well as reliable assistance when sitting down or getting up from the sofa or bed.

RESEARCH
The project began with interviews with physiotherapists, chiropractors, elderly care professionals, people with disabilities, and other relevant user groups.
A factory visit was also conducted to gain insight into furniture production and understand the conditions we needed to work within.
This gave us a clearer understanding of the needs that come with natural aging and physical limitations.

NEEDS
The research revealed many needs associated with natural aging.
The ones we chose to focus on in our design were the following:
– Independence
– Accessibility
– Stability
– Balance
– Confidence
– Support
